This heritage tri-purpose breed of cattle can be used for meat, draft and milk. Devons' milk has a high butterfat content, making it ideal for cheese or butter. We keep a brood herd of 10 cows along with steers, replacement heifers and bulls. Milking Devons are listed as 'critical' with The Livestock Conservancy. Our small flock of Leicesters are a great example of a dual-purpose, heritage sheep. Their wool grows upward of 12" a year and is known for it's strength and luster. They are also easy keepers, famously fat among those who breed them. We keep a breeding group of 10 ewes, in addition to replacement ewe lambs and rams. Leicesters are listed as 'threatened' by The Livestock Conservancy. To find out more about Leicesters, visit the breed association's website. |
Hog Island sheep are one of the few breeds of feral sheep in the US. Left on a barrier island off of the Virginia coast, this breed developed through the island's natural selection, making them hardy, parasite resistant and excellent mothers. We are working to grow our herd to 10 breeding ewes. Hog Islands are listed as 'critical' by The Livestock Conservancy. To find out more about Hog Islands, visit the breed association's website. |
